LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES 40DAYS CLOSURE OF EKO BRIDGE

Lagos, Nigeria — The Eko Bridge, a vital route to Lagos' island, will be closed for another 40 days starting on Sunday, July 23, 2023. This decision was jointly announced by the federal and Lagos State governments on Friday, July 21, 2023, due to urgent repairs necessary after its recent reopening. The closure will only affect the in-bound carriageway at the Alaka-Costain – Iganmu section. Olukorede Kesha, the federal controller of works in Lagos, expressed concerns about the structural stability of the entire bridge if the repairs and replacement of certain components were further delayed. While this closure will undoubtedly disrupt commuting for motorists who recently regained access to the bridge, intermittent closures were already hinted at during the reopening. The closure aims to facilitate necessary repairs by the contractor, Buildwell Plants and Equipment Limited, and alternative routes have been provided. Despite the challenges, Lagosians are urged to cooperate with the traffic management team during the closure. These infrastructural struggles highlight the immense challenges facing Africa's largest city.
